What We Accept as Normal in Horse Care

Horses have been used as symbols of freedom, yet for their size they are among the most confined animals. Stall boarding is considered normal. Small spaces. Separation from their herd. Limited movement. Minimal choice.
I have seen cinderblock stalls that feel more like prison cells built for punishment rather than care.
Horses are herd animals. They are designed to move, to relate, and to orient to land, weather, and one another. Freedom for horses means space, relationship, and the ability to express their nature.
At Starr Horse Retreats, we advocate for honoring horses in environments that support their natural state. We recognize horses as healers who help humans shed inherited trauma, fear, cruelty, and victimhood through presence, relationship, and daily care.
Let’s allow our horses to be horses.
