Starr Horse Retreats
Grass Valley, California
Welcome to Starr Horse Retreats
A Sanctuary for Horse-Human Connection
At Starr Horse Retreats, horses are honored as sovereign beings, not tools to be used, but teachers, partners, and willing participants in the relationship.

For more than six years, Starr Horse Retreats has pioneered a freedom-based approach that combines clicker training, liberty, and immersive horse-human experiences.
The herd invites us to slow down, listen, and become more present. Through relationship with horses, we begin to recognize unconscious patterns, regulate the nervous system, reconnect with the natural world, and experience ourselves differently.

Here, the horses lead.
Every experience begins by listening to them.
Our work is grounded in positive reinforcement, liberty-based interaction, bitless riding, herd-centered living, and respect for each horse’s willingness to participate.
This is not about using horses as tools.
It is about entering into relationship with them.
Whether you are seeking healing, personal transformation, or a more conscious way of working with horses, Starr Horse Retreats offers a space to reconnect with yourself, the herd, and the living Earth.

Come as you are. Leave as who you came to be.

We believe horses have much more to offer the world than performance or recreation. When given the freedom to live as horses, they become extraordinary teachers of presence, trust, regulation, and relationship. Everything we do begins with creating the conditions for horses to thrive.

Horse Healing Retreats

Awaken Through Horse Spirit Medicine

Reconnect Through the Wisdom of the Herd

Spend four days immersed in a freedom-based herd, where horses are honored as willing partners in the experience rather than tools for therapy.

Our retreats combine time with the horses, yoga, sound healing, Temazcal, flower baths, nature, and quiet reflection to create space for healing, renewal, and personal insight.

As you slow down and listen to the herd, many people experience greater presence, nervous system regulation, emotional clarity, and a renewed connection with themselves and the natural world.

Every retreat is different because every interaction with the horses is unique.
Come as you are. Leave with a deeper relationship to yourself, the herd, and the living Earth.

Clicker Training Retreat
A Four-Week Holistic Immersion

Learn a New Way of Being with Horses

Our Holistic Clicker Training Retreat is a four-week immersive experience for those who want to develop a deeper relationship with horses through clicker training, positive reinforcement, and mutual trust.

Rather than relying on pressure or force, we teach horses through clarity, choice, and communication. Clicker training creates willing participation and allows horses to become active partners in the learning process.

At Starr Horse Retreats, our horses live together as a herd in movement-based environments designed to support their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Their way of living is as much a part of the learning experience as the training itself.

Many participants arrive expecting to learn how to train horses.
They leave having transformed the way they think about horses and themselves.

During the four-week retreat, participants experience:

-
Daily hands-on clicker training with the herd

-
Positive reinforcement and ethical horse training

-
Bareback and tackless riding through clicker training

-
Liberty work and horse communication

-

-

Angelene Hall discusses her experience at Starr Horse Retreats

Our Philosophy

Our work is grounded in reverence, for horses, for the Earth, and for the wisdom carried across many cultures and traditions.

The practices we share have been learned through years of study, mentorship, and direct experience. We honor their origins while remaining committed to thoughtful stewardship, humility, and respect for the people and lineages from which they come.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief:

Horses are sovereign beings.
They are willing partners, teachers, and guides, not tools to be used.
Every retreat, training, and gathering begins from that foundation.
Learn more about the principles, ceremonies, and traditions that guide our work.
